Key Highlights

  • AppleCare One Family costs $49.99 per month (599.88 per year) and insures all eligible devices of up to six people in a Family Sharing group. It has been available since September 14 in the United States.
  • The maximum number of theft and loss claims is six per year for the entire group. AppleCare+ allows two and AppleCare One Individual allows three.
  • A family of four with four iPhones will pay around $48 per month for AppleCare+ only on iPhones. Family for $49.99 covers all other devices for about two dollars extra.
  • On one Apple Account, AppleCare One Individual will be cheaper up to eight devices ($49.94 per month). From nine devices, Family becomes a cheaper choice.
  • A 24-month AppleCare+ program with theft and loss protection costs between 27% and 36% of the iPhone 17 starting price of $799.
  • A repair of the screen of an out-of-warranty iPhone 17 costs up to $329, compared to $29 with insurance. This difference is one reason why coverage can be more valuable when phones are still new.
AppleCare One Family Explained: What U.S. iPhone Owners Need to Know in 2026

Apple now offers a coverage plan specifically designed for the entire family rather than for individuals. AppleCare One Family covers all members of a Family Sharing group under one subscription plan, which means that it is a completely different choice from insuring just one iPhone. It really depends on how many Apple products you have in your family, how often they get dropped or lost, and what they'll be worth when sold.

What is AppleCare One Family?

This policy provides coverage for all the eligible devices in the Family Sharing group of up to six people, and that too at a fixed price per month. The offering was made available for purchase in the US on September 14.

Any adult in the Family Sharing group can initiate the policy. In case Purchase Sharing is enabled, the family organizer will end up paying regardless of which adult initiates the policy. This is important since the plan requires an active subscription for coverage. In case the subscriber opts out of or is excluded from the Family Sharing group, coverage will end for the devices belonging to members of the group. All eligible devices as well as new purchases will be covered automatically, while eligible existing AppleCare plans can be moved to AppleCare One Family.

What it covers

The coverage includes the same benefits as AppleCare+: coverage for accidental damages such as drops and spills, battery service, and priority support by Apple Experts. Theft and loss coverage is also available for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Devices under four years of age in good working order are eligible. Note that if your family owns second-hand iPads and Macs, you should make sure whether older devices can qualify from an existing plan according to Apple's policy.

All claims require a fee. The fee for an iPhone is $29 for screen/back glass damage, $99 for other accidental damage, and $149 for theft or loss. The fee for other devices can be found on Apple's fees page. Theft and loss claims require the Find My feature to be turned on at the time of loss, and the device must be erased, disabled, and transferred to another owner prior to receiving a new one from Apple. The Family plan provides for six theft and loss claims per year for the entire family, not for each family member individually.

How it compares with AppleCare+ and AppleCare One

In 2025, the first generation of AppleCare One offered coverage for up to three devices associated with one Apple Account, so it was impossible to add devices owned by other family members. This issue is resolved in the Family plan. The comparison between AppleCare+ and two AppleCare One versions is given in the table below.

AppleCare+ vs AppleCare One vs AppleCare Family

AppleCare Plus and AppleCare One Individual coverage caps apply to claims of theft or loss. Apple states that the Family limit is six claims overall, but verifies from Apple whether the cap applies to accidental damage or theft/loss.

How much does it cost?

Priced at $49.99 per month (or $599.88 per year), AppleCare One Family makes sense only for bigger families. Single iPhone user: AppleCare+ is more cost-effective at $11.99 per month for an iPhone 17, theft and loss included. Two iPhones, two Apple Watches and one iPad belonging to a couple: Five individual AppleCare+ subscriptions would cost $50 or more per month, whereas two AppleCare One Individual subscriptions cover up to six devices for $49.94 per month, whereas Family becomes more cost-effective starting from nine devices.

Four to six people: Four AppleCare+ subscriptions for iPhones would cost $48 per month, thus making $49.99 per month for the family plan, including devices that will be bought in the future, a minor increase. If kids are rough on their devices and your family upgrades yearly, the move is even stronger. Careful device owners and families with older devices may prefer AppleCare+ or Individual options.

Is the cost worth it against depreciation?

The value of an iPhone depreciates each month that you use it, and the condition of the product is highly influential on how much money you will get in return after selling. This is where coverage comes into play. For instance, an iPhone 17 was released for about $799. Coverage of AppleCare+ with theft and loss is priced at $219 for 24 months, which is about $288 if you choose a monthly plan of $11.99. Thus, it is about 27% to 36% of the initial cost of your product, not counting claim fees.

However, damage may cost you even more during resale. There are variations in pricing depending on model, capacity, and other factors, so you should consider these numbers as an example only. The best offers on Cashmycell for iPhone 16 Pro start from $870, while even a damaged iPhone is still sold for $50-$200. Repair of the screen under coverage costs only $29, thus placing your phone in the first category. The lack of insurance would mean that the price of replacing a non-working display screen could be up to $329. If your phone was purchased a couple of years ago and now is worth only a couple of hundred dollars, then such an expense could be equal to the total price of the device. Coverage is especially effective when the phone is brand-new and expensive. Over time, its market price will fall, whereas the repair price will remain unchanged.

If you are going to sell your device, then you can compare buyer offers on Cashmycell in less than one minute. For the same phone, prices among different buyers may vary by $100 or even more. Remember to disable the Find My iPhone function before shipping as the buyers have to activate the phone.

Bottom line

AppleCare One Family can be a good option for a family with many members and many devices, but it may not be the right choice for everyone. If you have an extended family that uses a lot of iPhones and devices, then this package can offer value with its flat rate and automatic coverage of future purchases. Anyone else needs to look at AppleCare+ or AppleCare One Individual before buying this plan. Just tally up your devices and see how old they are.

Methodology

The prices, claim limits, eligibility requirements, and repair fees are based on the information available from the AppleCare website, the fees and deductibles table, and the AppleCare+ Theft and Loss Coverage terms. The U.S. release date of September 14, 2026, and the Family Sharing requirements were verified from Apple's support documentation and from MacRumors and Digital Trends reports. The costs use the listed prices from Apple's iPhone 17 plans of either $11.99 per month or $219 for 24 months. The percentages show the comparison between those and the $799 launch price. Examples include only the listed devices. Resale prices are based on indicative Cashmycell figures as of September 29, 2026.

Terms and fees can vary depending on the device, state, and taxation, and can be changed at any time by Apple. All numbers are approximate. This article does not constitute financial advice.

FAQs

  1. What is AppleCare One Family? It is the AppleCare plan that includes all the eligible Apple devices of up to six people within a single Family Sharing group at a flat rate per month with the same benefits as those in AppleCare+.
  2. What is the monthly cost of AppleCare One Family? The cost is fixed at $49.99 per month, equivalent to $599.88 per year. The cost will remain the same irrespective of the number of eligible devices covered.
  3. Who may initiate the plan, and what will happen if that person leaves the Family Sharing group? Any adult member within the Family Sharing group may initiate this plan. If the subscriber leaves or is removed from the Family Sharing group, the plan will be canceled and coverage will end.
  4. What does AppleCare One Family cover? Accidental damage like drops or spills, battery repair, and priority service with Apple experts. A charge is applied per incident.
  5. Does it provide coverage for theft and loss? Yes, it covers theft and loss of iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. The Find My feature should be active at the time of loss, and your device has to be erased and disabled before you receive the replacement. Claiming your iPhone theft or loss involves a $149 fee.
  6. How many claims can a family file in a year? Six theft and loss claims in total for the family, compared to two for AppleCare+ and three for AppleCare One Individual.

There doesn't seem to be any information on whether or not devices over four years old are eligible to transfer from another plan in Apple's official terms, so check with Apple if your device is over four years old.
  9. When does the Family plan become cheaper than the other options? It depends on the number of people and eligible devices in the family. For one Apple Account, AppleCare One Individual remains the cheaper option until eight devices, and the Family plan becomes cheaper starting at the ninth.
  10. Is it worthwhile if I'm planning on selling my iPhone soon? Not usually if you plan on selling the phone within about a year, as the plan may cost quite a bit of your phone's remaining value. Determine how much your iPhone is worth by comparing offers on Cashmycell.
